A 48 x 11 is basically the same as a 52 x 12.  At 100 rpm that's well  
over 30 mph- if I'm descending that fast, it's time to coast and get  
some rest.  Come to think of it, I did road races and crits with a 48  
x 11 top gear.  I didn't do any worse than I did when I had a 53 x 12.
