no, it's not really bad. You can run it that way (I for example do it,
if that helps you :). In my opinion it's easier as you don't have to
worry that the QMAILQUEUE env is unset (eg shell users or webmail) and
circumventing qmail-scanner...

I guess the problem was this:

This is how it was setup before you installed 1.20rc3

mail comes in -> qmail-queue -> qmail-scanner.pl -> qmail-queue.orig

now the default setup of qmail-scanner changed it to:

mail comes in -> qmail-queue -> qmail-scanner.pl -> qmail-queue --> XXXX

Do you see the loop? :)

I would recommend that you look for the original qmail-queue (the rpm
must have moved that) and change the qmail-queue path in qmail-scanner
to that file instead of your wrapper.
Everything should be fine again then...

Yes, that's the reason.

AFAIK xinetd would support setting the environment var but i really don't
know.

IMHO plex must do it this way, as they are not allowed (at least under
the normal license) to distribute patched versions of qmail.

Hope it helps & Greetz
