The major advantage is that you can put the card out of your camera directly into the computer to transfer pictures instead of connecting with a lead. It will certainly take SD cards which go up to 2Gb I think and probably take SDHC (High Capacity) cards 4Gb-32Gb. Wikipedia quotes an SDXC version which will go up to 2TB.
