It is a series of services not just a few dlls. I can make 4 instances of SQL Server on one machine and take any one of them down and not effect the others running. There is then the series of running the service is part of what group in security as well as who can do what. On a single desktop that is a tad overblown. For a Windows network with AD running that has been set up properly it is a lot more involved. You can preset user creds for doing services in the future. I know that SS2005 had a lot of installer trouble and it was fixed in 2008. In that it would get 7/8 of the way and find that you were lacking something and then fail. It would mark that instance and not let you put it in the next go around.
