My suspicion has always been that people feel like they are getting their money's worth if the installation takes forever. "Wow, I'm installing some serious software on my system right now." I know I used to feel that way when installing new versions of VFP. I could read the slides and get all excited as the progress bar inches to the right. But the fact is, it doesn't jibe with how long it actually takes to copy the files with, say, XCOPY and to manually register the DLL's, which would take a couple minutes instead of 15. So either the installer script was needlessly redundant and bloated, or games were being played.
