New clients: I estimate a deposit based on how many hours I think I'll need for
the
couple weeks or month. I stop working when the deposit is used up.

After a time (once trust has built up) I start relaxing the deposit
requirement,
eventually converting to Net 15 terms, with monthly billing cycles. My main
client
that I've worked for going on 12 years now has "2%10 Net 30" terms.

I feel that I've missed out on some potentially good gigs, because I sound more
expensive from the client's perspective, and they don't know me yet. But I also
feel
that the policy triages away the jerks, and I don't want to waste time with
jerks.
