How do you get around doing a few weeks, or months work for free if they
don't pay, or do you get a retainer up front?

Just asking because I'm looking for some contracts and want to make sure I
don't get burned, yet again..

These discussions make me happy that I only take jobs where I bill on a time
and materials basis. It limits my options (perhaps severely) but it also
limits my exposure to total dickheads that expect me to work for free.
