I am on mine all day, every day and it makes sense to upgrade every year,
plus it's a write-off.

I think a laptop should last about 4 to 5 years, by which time the 
hardware will be out of date.  Every year seems a little bit soon to me, 
although your wife/kids are getting some benefit from the old ones.
