MS has made some advances in the past couple of years with PowerShell and some of the new commands available through the cmd shell. It is still not POSIX, though. > Editing plain-text config files > with vim on *nix is a far cry from trying to add or modify a registry key in > HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/ Tru 'dat. But GNOME's making an attempt to be almost as obscure with gconf ;) > Also, I thought IE was an inextricable part of the operating system. :) Inextricable, yes. I'm sure the bits are required on disk, even if you are console-only. Wonder how you read HTML Help files :)? One of the dumbest ideas I've ever found from MS was the idea of using HTML as the common rendering platform for internal GUI documents. Perhaps they were visionary, as HTML5-based applications are starting to take off. But I thought they were a decade too early in integrating a rendering agent into the OS, along with all of the security-issue-fraught problems of JavaScript and VBScript. It was a solution in search of a problem, imo. Rendering HTML in Help files and Visual Studio IDE sidebars was a lot of overhead Not that I didn't take a shot at it myself... http://www.tedroche.com/Present/1998/HTMLHelpDoc.htm I believe that was one of my presentations that I retired from the repetoire before the feature actually shipped :) Though we did use HTML Help for HackFox6 and 7. I was just reading that file the other day, using Okular on Linux. It reproduces it quite well, without the IE dependencies. -- Ted Roche Ted Roche & Associates, LLC http://www.tedroche.com _______________________________________________ Post Messages to: ProFox@leafe.com Subscription Maintenance: http://leafe.com/mailman/listinfo/profox OT-free version of this list: http://leafe.com/mailman/listinfo/profoxtech Searchable Archive: http://leafe.com/archives/search/profox This message: http://leafe.com/archives/byMID/profox/CACW6n4sTRk5rPBExam=g82whvwzk9u5jh0pkay7l2n-jczc...@mail.gmail.com ** All postings, unless explicitly stated otherwise, are the opinions of the author, and do not constitute legal or medical advice.
