ok look at /etc/resolv.conf on the email server

i use :

domain scom.ca
search scom.ca
options timeout:2
options attempts:1
nameserver 10.220.0.2
nameserver 10.220.0.18
nameserver 10.220.0.6
nameserver 10.220.0.16

note that resolv.conf usually supports up to 3 servers.

this gives the basic's on multiple dns server's and how to handle timeouts

note my name servers are internal to my network (the 10.220.0/24)

however on the email server you should throw a 8.8.8.8 in as a backup

No. Email server should have own local recursiver non-forwarding resolver whenever possible. It may forward internal domains to internal servers, but not to public DNS servers.
