Hi, so far I am using the postfix package of my distribution, which is
probably already considered ‘legacy’. For this reason I would like to
compile the current stable version 3.10.1. Is there any
documentation/instructions for Debian/Ubuntu on how to do this? What needs
to be considered when using virtual mailboxes? Are there any other pitfalls?
The most important decision is whether to replace the vendor-provided
package with a newer build, or to install a separate Postfix built in
/opt/postfix or similar, and just not use or even de-install the
vendor-provided Postfix.
Well, I have the opportunity to test everything on a non-productive
system for now. So I'd give it a try with a complete new installation of
postfix without a previously installed vendor-provided package. I could
retrieve the necessary information to build postfix from source, and now
have a fresh build.
I am running Postfix out of /opt, with just "alternatives" symlinks for
/usr/sbin/sendmail. So less prone to conflicts with system updates.
Could you please tell me a little more about the "alternatives" symlinks
for /usr/sbin/sendmail? Why are these necessary and what are you linking
sendmail against?
Thanks
Andreas
