The order of operations is important. The router should connect
"automagically" but as I use a Netgear with OpenWRT, YMMV.
1. turn off / power down cable mondem and router
2. turn on cable modem. Wait for wait until POWER, US, DS, LINK
lights are solid green and INTERNET light should be blinking rapidly.
3. turn on your router. After a bit the internet light on the router
(depending on model) should be blinking.
4. go to your routers web page and check WAN status. IP4 and IP 6
addresses should pop up within 5 min. If not, check the equivalent
menu navigation of NETWORK - INTERFACES - WAN (in OpenWRT). Make sure
the protocol is set for "DHCP client". There shouls also be a
"connect" or some such button.

I just replaced the old RCA-Thompson with an Arris DOCSIS 3.0 eMTA
modem (I have Comcast VOIP as well). In my case it IP4 and IP6
assignment fired right up.
