An entire kernel recompile is not required. You can compile a single
module separately.

Yep ... built a module on RHEL4 and modprobed. Will report the
details. Got u2fs which offers read-only mounting options. But does
not fail if you don't give ro in "-o ro,ufstype=44bsd". But it mounts
read-only by default.
