Hi everybody,

I got the BSNL broadband connectivity today. Overall my experience is
positive.

I had filled up and given the form almost immediately after these were
physically available in the Maharshi Karve Road exchange. I received a
call to make the payment about 10 days back, when I collected the
demand note and made the payment on 31/1/05 - and went out of town!
However, the modem was delivered at my home on 2/2/05. It is HUAWEI,
SmartAX MT800 model. The persons had kept couple of telephone numbers
to call back on my return.

I called the numbers today morning and BSNL engineer promptly visited me
(in about 45 minutes) to test the connection by using his
username/password. Awaiting his arrival, I had initiated the setting
up of the mdem thorugh "Network and Internet" under "configure your
computer" in my Mandrake (10.1) installation. It is ADSL, PPPOE
cnnection. The list of countries in the database does not include
India, however, it did not matter, I just selected the first in the
list (Argentina, if I recollect correct). During the process, I was
required to insert the first installation CD and (I guess) ADSL package
was installed on my computer. After that I just followed the
directions - BSNL engineer entered the username and password to test
the connection speed through www.bandwidthplace.com. It was about 800
kbps, whcih was OK according to him. He went back with the report at
about 12, promising that BSNL (Probably from Chennai) would call me
with the username and password by afternoon. It did not happen till
4:00, so I called up the telephone I had contacted me earlier and was
directed to another number. There I got the username and password
without any problem/delay. I followed same process (make new
connection) under the "network and internet" to setup my account and it
worked without any problem. The speed test with www.bandwidthplace.com
indicated the speed to be 287.7 kbps, which is good considering I have
opted for 256 kbps connection.

I also asked for the site where I could change my password and how to
access mail accounts for this connection. The information was not
readily available, but the lady came back to me with this information
in about 20 minutes.

As of now, Dataone does not provide POP access, it is web access only
for the mails.

Guess, that's about all for the Dataone connection as of now. If
anybosy wants any more information, please feel free to contact me on
email/telephone - 25468773.
