Hi

Firstly, both Fedora/Centos and Ubuntu will support your environment requirements, the preference for beginners is ubuntu/fedora, my preference is also Ubuntu mainly due to supportability, for those who understand its debian anyway.

Ubuntu 12 is Debian Squeeze highly stable and lightweight, ubuntu and fedora or both suitable platforms, and both have there merrits, the only obivous limit is Fedora -> Centos -> RHEL (now spend some money!!)

I would stick with Ubuntu (and server) 12.04 or 12.10 LTS (Long Term Support) is ideal and simple, my daugther of 11 supports her own ubuntu LAMP running her eShop.

Ubuntu on AWS is excellent, I am using on 65 node autoscalling web platform which all runs ubuntu 12.10 Server LTS. Never fails (well only when AWS messes up).

BTW, Suse is another options, but I wouldnt bother really.

From personal experience, ubuntu is big pile o' crap :(

Never worked good on neither of my computers.
Fedora is oriented at new users too, and it comes with gnome 3 instead of that 'unity';
