Richard - you are right not enough info!

So here is info that is missing!

Server is out on the internet.  

not sure of flavour.  It is headless and he can only access via the
normal "User" tools - ftp, etc.  I will clarify tomorrow

Michele, now that you know that, do you helpful suggestions still work?

Hi.For MySQL I would download and install MySQL Workbench.You can setup backups 
and if I'm not wrong,you can schedule them as well.You can create a dump file 
and save it on your hard drive.
Then you can use Easy Backup (or any other backup programs) to copy/move the 
backup files to a different drive.Usually those backup software allows you to 
do incremental or differential backups.
Your friend should look in the repository for his flavour of Linux.No need to 
create any script or to learn cron or any other language :-)
