This one did not seem particularly tight or brittle. I’m with you on the one
cycle. Used thick 8 mil bag. From what most are saying I am hoping there are no
issues. Since this is a reproduction figure it’s a good test subject for our
set up. It's great to have everyone's input! JTV

Hi Joel and Ayesha

You have to be careful with drums – the hide can split given the differences
between materials – the hide head and whatever material the body is made of.
You should be ok if you do the standard double wrapping of plastic to reduce
fluctuating RH. You can also add some sorbent material (tissue, cotton etc?) to
help with this. Also – never put it through a double freeze – it is better to
put it through a single freeze for longer. (2 freezes are not recommended for
most if any materials).

Good luck!

Hello,

I’m helping with a storage move to a new facility and we have been freezing
many drums and other skins and hides under tension (-40 C, 72/24). So far, I
haven’t seen any harm done to the objects. I haven’t been repeating any
freezing cycles though.

Will be curious to see what others say as I was recently asking conservation
colleagues about this and it was similarly inconclusive.

Best,

a.

Repro Drum to Be Played

All we are moving a drum from one building to another and are on the fence
about 72/24 cold treatment at -32. I looked in The Care of Historic Musical
Instruments and there is no real guidance either way. Have any of you done a
cold treatment on drums before and what was your takeaway/outcome?
