Hello,

I’m helping with a storage move to a new facility and we have been freezing
many drums and other skins and hides under tension (-40 C, 72/24). So far, I
haven’t seen any harm done to the objects. I haven’t been repeating any
freezing cycles though.

Will be curious to see what others say as I was recently asking conservation
colleagues about this and it was similarly inconclusive.

Best,

a.

Subject: [PestList] Low Temp Treatments for Drums
Repro Drum to Be Played

All we are moving a drum from one building to another and are on the fence
about 72/24 cold treatment at -32. I looked in The Care of Historic Musical
Instruments and there is no real guidance either way. Have any of you done a
cold treatment on drums before and what was your takeaway/outcome?
