Hi! Here are some articles that may be of interest. The first two links deal specifically with drums and confirm the advice that Gretchen and others have put forward. Most of these links are also listed on the MuseumPests page on freezing, which I didn't realize until now - whoever worked on that section, great job!

This one did not seem particularly tight or brittle. I'm with you on the one cycle. Used thick 8 mil bag. From what most are saying I am hoping there are no issues. Do not click links, open attachments or take action unless you know the contents are safe] Hi Joel and Ayesha You have to be careful with drums - the hide can split given the differences between materials - the hide head and whatever material the body is made of. You should be ok if you do the standard double wrapping of plastic to reduce fluctuating RH. You can also add some sorbent material (tissue, cotton etc?) to help with this. Also - never put it through a double freeze - it is better to put it through a single freeze for longer. (2 freezes are not recommended for most if any materials). Good luck! So far, I haven't seen any harm done to the objects. I haven't been repeating any freezing cycles though.
