As you recall, I asked a similar question to the PDML about my spring
trip to Japan and China.

I strongly recommend taking the K-5.  It is a great camera, very
powerful and versatile, and it will get shots a lesser camera will
not.  I think a 16-45 zoom might be limited.

I took my K-5 II S, with my DA 18-135 lens,  my DA L 50-200. and my
50mm 1.8 prime.  I took many images, and more than 90 % with the
18-135.  It is a perfect lens for travel photography, IMHO.  I used
the 50-200 for a few shots at the Great Wall and Hakone National Park,
and the 50 mm for a few night shots in the city, but I really didn't
need either.  I also carried my Optio, but took perhaps two images
with it.

Good luck,  Italy is a wonderful place for sight-seeing, for
photography, but most of all for just enjoying life!
