fascinating pictures, thanks. They show the effect of the liquefaction
really well.

Yes - I found them really informative (former geology student that I am) and I hope taking them was good theropy -
And besides, they are good photos :-)

Hope the worst of it all is over (the violence of the shaking ) as someone else mentioned from my part of the world what you guys are going through down under really put our paltry snows in perspective.
stay safe and well

Subject: Photos from my neighbourhood in Christchurch

Nothing as striking as what you're seeing in the media, but this is
what our local neighbourhood looks like along with a few pics of my
house.

Just heard on the radio now that the Hotel Grand Chancellor, our
tallest hotel, is at risk of collapse. Apparently it's leaning and
that lean may be worsening. That's quite a big building and if it goes
it's going to cause absolute carnage in the surrounding area. I don' t
know which way it's leaning... it it goes the "right" way it'll fall
into a fairly open space with much less collateral damage. They're
urgently evacuating a two block radius. There are only search & rescue
teams in that area so it's not as big a job as it sounds. But another
small aftershock could be all it takes to set it off.
