I'd guess that Pentax is keeping the K-x model going because they can very easily compete with the entry level Canons and Nikons right now.

The K-x is, AFAICT, doing great biz for Pentax here in Canada. Stores that haven't carried Pentax for years are selling the K-x alongside other entry level Canons and Nikons, and beating them all on price. My BIL was able to grab a K-x with kit lens for my niece for about $530 Canadian a few weeks ago. The store he got it from is Blacks, a country-wide chain that mainly caters to the P&S crowd. For the last few years Blacks only carried a few Pentax P&S's like the waterproof models.

I have no way of knowing if Pentax is simply dumping the remainder of existing K-x inventory before price-dropping the K-r or if in fact they are manufacturing new K-x stock to supply the demand for price-sensitive entry level DSLRs here.

But in any event it's a good sign that the Pentax name is returning to mainstream retailers here.

IMO it is extremely unlikely. Kr is obviously an upgrade of Kx, therefore it would have to be purely marketing decision to keep both. I don't think Pentax has the capacity to /keep/ producing three 16x24 frame cameras and 645D at the same time.

I'll be curious to see if Pentax maintains three levels of body
prices, i.e., Kx, Kr, K5.
