Here we have religious freedom.
I therefore worship Aperture, which seems to do everything all the
various disjointed programs you all are discussing try to do, with the
exception of things that Photoshop can do, which is easily accessed by
going to the "edit with" menu selection.
What is this RAW conversion stuff? Doesn't the camera allow you to
capture in PEF or DNG. Won't your software open either file for
adjustments?
Aperture opens my PEF or any other RAW file and creates a reference
file in two sizes for thumbnails and full screen viewing. All editing
is done on the reference file, in Aperture or Photoshop (thru
Aperture) and the original mage is never touched. You can chose to
import the original files into Aperture, or not. I personally leave
the originals where I place them on a hard disk, and that is doubly
backed up. When you are satisfied, you can export a copy of what you
have done as a JPEG, TIFF, and others, or leave it as a RAW file.
The Aperture database of your images is just pointers to the original
image file, and a small file that describes all the modifications you
have made to that image.
