IPhoto does a decent job. I fooled around with it a bit and was surprised as well. I imagine it shares some conversion technology with Aperture.

Thanks for all the replies.

I've been fiddling around with several different programs. And I'll
just have to decide.

Frankly I've really been enjoying the look of the photos done by
iPhoto. I'm really rather surprised by this in fact.

I just downloaded Bibble and was struck by how much noise my sample
photo at 3200 had when processed with Bibble. I pulled up the copy
processed by iPhoto and you'd almost think it was shot with two
different cameras. If only iPhoto would allow you to edit IPTC I'd be
good to go.

At this point I'm guessing that I'll just stick with iPhoto for the
time being and save my pennies to get Aperture. The theory being that
Aperture will process the photos the same way iPhoto does. I tried
Aperture's demo several months ago so I can't play with these files
now.

Thanks again.
