The "domain", pretty much, is just a pointer to a (set of) host(s). The company that "has" your domain puts you in their name servers as records that "point to" the hosts that actually run the services for your domain. Those hosts can be anywhere. For example, I registered shootingshark.com through Names Direct, but it's hosted on my personal space at Earthlink.
