TWAIN is an interface standard for image acquisition devices (scanners and the like). The Photoshop plug-in would allow you to import an image directly from a scanner into Photoshop. The TWAIN driver allows you to get SilverFast function from graphics/imaging applications other than PhotoShop. It is like a printer driver is for a printer. It just happens that PhotoShop uses a plugin to get SilverFast function instead of the TWAIN driver. PhotoShop is still using the TWAIN protocol to talk to the scanner, just not the separate driver.Shel Belinkoff wrote:
I was about to download a trial version of Silverfast and discovered that I
don't know which to DL. One version sets up a Photoshop plug-in, the other
is for "Twain." So, what's Twain? Why would I want a plug-in as opposed
to Twain, or vice-versa? I couldn't find an explanation on the site that
defined the differences or why one option should be chosen over another. Is anyone using SF with PS CS on Win XP? How's it working out for you?

So the answer is, if you want to use SilverFast with Photoshop then you shouldn't need the TWAIN driver, just the Photoshop plugin. If you have another application that you want to use with SilverFast then you would need the TWAIN driver.
According to the LaserSoft website, there should also be a standalone "launcher" as well which should allow you to scan images directly from the scanner using Silverfast without an imaging application.
