Dark? Have you ever compared it to anything else? Or are you writing this based on heard rumours? I have compared it directly to VF in *istD and the one in D70 is much smaller but much brighter and contrasty too... I have just compared D70 viewfinder to the one in MZ-S. It is as bright at f4.5 as VF in MZ-S at f3.5. And VF in MZ-S AFAIR is slightly brighter than in *istD.

Manual focus is totally UNUSABLE (and tell you, I tried even  with
long fast 2.8 lenses). Sometimes it's hard to see the details of the
subject.
It depends on one's eyesight :-) I tried manual focusing with Sigma 70-200/2.8 and micro 105/2.8 - yup - it wasn't as easy as with *istD, but still quite possible and I had good results with it. But my eyesight is perfect :-)
