the autofocus on a good P&S camera works perfectly well if you know how to
control its focus points and modes. the few dozen shots i have had not
focused when i had the right control point or focus mode, it was because i
was in a hurry and pressed the shutter release too soon. i could disable
that, but i choose not to. if the digital camera doesn't have manual control
of focus points and modes, it's not for people who care. i have had to use
manual focus only a couple of times ever, and the times that worked, i
locked focus and moved the camera. most cameras with manual focus mode have
very coarse steps. my camera has 256 and that isn't adequate unless you move
the camera.
