Given that all other Pentax digital cameras can take short videos why can't
the istD? Is it because the istD has a shutter? If so, why does it need
one?

I know that if you want to take videos it's best to use a proper video
camera but it is a handy function to have on a digital camera. My sister
recently went on an overseas holiday with her Optio-S and the videos she
took were an excellent complement to her still shots. As an aside, we
watched a 'slide show' on a TV which while nowhere near as impressive as a
real slide show is the way of the future. When the technology matures I can
imagine watching 'slides' on a high definition TV screen which will provide
images comparable to slides today (and a lot more practical in terms of
setup).
