It's because of the SLR mirror and the fact that's there's no way to view the LCD with the mirror down.

As an aside, we watched a 'slide show' on a TV which while nowhere near as impressive as a real slide show is the way of the future. When the technology matures I can imagine watching 'slides' on a high definition TV screen which will provide images comparable to slides today (and a lot more practical in terms of setup).
