I know a little about Japanese language but I'm saying "Neekon" 
as well - that's how you read it in Polish. With *ist it's 
pretty simple as well - I would just ommit the star symbol and 
ask for "e-st" (hope I got the fonetical transcription right).
I might be not far from getting it right - many words are very 
simillari pronaunced in Polish as in Japanese - karaoke is the 
first that comes to mind.
