Hi Skip,
As you may have read I was one of the defenders (and I included the lens in
my travel lens set), please don't be offended I was merely defending the
lenses unique qualities. The unfortunate thing about technical lens tests is
that they most often don't take into account the environment in which the
lens may be used. The Leica Noctilux is a prime example of this, in most
technical tests it fails miserably but in the field it is a gem.
I agree the Pentax 50f1.2 lens has low contrast wide open (the A series is
better BTW) but really who cares when the contrast of the scene (street
scene at night/pub/parade etc) has too much contrast for the film. The lens
is as sharp as any other wide open and even though it may be a little softer
or lower contrast wide open it still offers a uniquely small depth of field which
is useful at times. Having said that I am not often in a position to fully open
the lens in good sunlight given the film speeds and bodies I generally use
(ISO160 LX 1/2000sec).
So again please don't be offended and don't keep your fingers off the
keyboard.
Cheers,
Rob Studdert
