The federal government repeatedly has cut budgets for park and
recreation areas over the past 20 years. At this point our tax dollars
actually do not cover even a bare bones budges for these areas and fees
for parking and other services are an increasingly important part of
their budgets.  Perhaps a "Friends of Gateway National Recreation Area"
could be formed by birders or a local bird club and used to raise funds,
which would make birders part of the financial picture without placing a
burden on those who have less money to pay for a permit or a Lyft ride?
