Ah-hah!  The herring was green!

Try setting "hide_top_limited" when limiting to a tagged subthread.  I
think that does what you want, and with a little scripting you could
wrap everything into a macro.  Thanks to Marco for inspiring me to
search through the manual for "thread". ;)
