I can tell you what's happening, then. I had this problem for a while with one googlegroups list and gmail via (unintentionally) my isp. The error appears to be with authentication in SMTP. Some lists don't seem to care so much, but the one I was on (and I'm guessing the same is true for the one you're on) don't like SPF=neutral or (obviously) SPF=fail; they want SPF=pass. Going through your isp to gmail's SMTP will get you SPF=neutral, and your posts via e-mail get blocked. So you need to connect and authenticate properly with gmail's SMTP server. However, with the addition of the "new" method for configuring sendmail, I'm lost (sendmail.cf USED to be a lot easier for me to work with). So, when I learned about Mutt's new (to me) ability to connect directly to gmail's SMTP server, log in properly, and deliver mail, while still using fetchmail to get incoming POP3 mail, that was the obviosu fix. I fixed this by bypassing sendmail (or the popular substitutes---I, personally, find sendmail the easiest to configure, mainly because of the years I spent in the past with it, configuring sendmail.cf by hand).
