So, I think I understand what you want: gmail. Yes, it's a web interface, with limited keyboard commands, but the whole basket/basement thing is implemented near exactly as you describe. I think you'd be pretty happy with it, though a specialised version for your own domain costs a bit more than mutt.

And, mutt + screen is beautiful. I run several instances of mutt, so I can quickly access my various common folders with a simple ctl-a ctl-[np]. jake
