that's most probably the case.

mutt is instructed to show the subject
when it has changed from the previous message.
now, if a message has two followups with a new subject
which happen to be the same then mutt will show both -
even though they are the same.

hmm.. can you type up a sample mailbox which shows this?
You might attach this mailbox and then we can
take a look at it with "mutt -f filename" etc.
