Disclaimer: I did not see the original post, so this advice might be useless... ;-) It may be that sendmail is not running on the system, or is not currently accepting mail due to some error condition. Check to see if it's running using something like ps axu |grep sendmail and look for a message about "sendmail: Accepting connections" or some such thing. If that gives you no clues, try checking your system logs (probably /var/log/mail.log or similar).
