It's been a while since I discovered this problem with my installation,
so I don't remember the details, but I couldn't get the "N" indicator to
work reliably until I configured mutt with "--enable-buffy-size".  Now
it works fine.  (I'm using mutt-1.2i on HP-UX 10.20.)

Your folder_format should already contain the "%N" field.

You could try that.  Before doing so, however, you might execute
'mutt -v' to see the options that Slackware compiled it with.
