But there is no reason to get a validity check on irrelevant keys is
there??

You don't care one bit about the validity of Alices key when sending a
mail to Bob?

IMHO the best way would be to just let the user choose a key, THEN check
the validity of THAT key.

Trust me, when you have 499 keys, you really want to avoid checking the validity on 
all those on a Pentium 233.
