It may be worth keeping the prior type around. Although it
likely expends more bits, it also requires less processor time,
and thus may be useful for some applications.
There also exists the "--ath-adjust" option that can be used to
activate experimental code. Sometimes, people get confused
between "--adapt-thres-type" and "--ath-adjust".
If we do keep the "--adapt-thres-type" option, we should rename it
to more accurately reflect its current function, that is,
selecting the loudness approximation algorithm for the
adaptive/auto-leveling threshold of quiet.
I suggest the following changes,
"--atoq-sensitivity" to replace "--adapt-thres-level"
"--atoq-approx-type" to replace "--adapt-thres-type"
and if we keep "--ath-adjust",
"--atoq-type" to replace "--ath-adjust"
("--ath-adjust" may confuse some, as this label could reasonably
be assigned to the purpose now connected with "--athlower".)
Using an "--atoq-*" prefix for all options associated with
the adaptive auto-leveling unifies these switches while clearly
distinguishing them from other options such as "--athlower" or
"--athtype" that tune the absolute level of the ATH.
(Alternately using "--aath-*" or "--aaath" (for adaptive /
auto-leveling absolute threshold of hearing) instead of "--atoq-*"
might make more sense in some respects, but it could allow easier
confusion. For example, "--aath-type" sounds very similar to
"--athtype".)
I hope to get a little feedback on renaming the "--adapt-thres-*"
and "--ath-adjust" switches to "--atoq-*" switches. If no one
says anything, I will go ahead with at least changing the names of
the "--adapt-thres-*" switches. The option "--ath-adjust" has
been around longer, so I will await approval from interested
developers before so boldly changing the name on that. =)
Meanwhile, I hope to check out the power-law model patch (that
Alexander posted on Lame-dev) sometime in the next week or two.
Kind regards,
- John
