Well Owen……..

With regard to Pride of Ownership we don’t judge the underside (with this in
mind), and I would expect most cars to be treated with some sort of
inhibitor. Mine certainly is.

But Waxoyl??? – I used it since it first appeared in Exchange & Mart, up to
the early 90’s. But after experimentation I found that other products were
more convenient to use and longer lasting. So I now go for either Dinitrol.
Or a Tectyl product (made by Valvoline). Some of the Tectyl aerosols go on
very easily (no silly hand pumps) and dry to a waxy residue which lasts &
lasts.

Bob,

Apply when new. The sooner the better. There is then little chance for the
corrosion to begin.

The only caveat I would add here is that, if you are planning entering
concours d'élègance competitions, the judges don't like Waxoyl when they
look underneath as it isn't elegant. This is where the "Pride of Ownership"
class comes in handy at MSCC events, as they expect that you'll have done
something sensible under the car and so don't get excited about it. Dave
Wellings can advise further. Dave?

Owen,

Lecturer in materials and corrosion at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen.
