Outputs from my previous message were outputs using the open source "nv"
driver in XFree86. I loaded the nVidia binary drivers and retried the
record. Freeze happens the same way, no matter what drivers I use.
Issuing the following command:

lavrec -f a -i n -d 2 -q 75 -a 16 -r 48000 -l 90 -R l -s -U -w -t 6240
test%02d.avi

yielded a freeze after 57 seconds of recording. 

Below I have listed the /var/log/messages output from around that
timeframe with the reboot as the final message.
