Hi Ronald, Thanks so much for fielding the issue. Here's what I came up with for initial troubleshooting:

Here's the applicable /var/log/messages output for a run of lavrec with no audio (-a 0) and xawtv running at the same time: Oct 8 08:41:32 kernel: DC10plus[0]: zoran_open(lavrec, pid=[18323]), users(-)=1 Oct 8 08:42:00 CROND[18329]: (mail) CMD (/usr/bin/python -S /var/lib/mailman/cron/qrunner) Oct 8 08:43:00 CROND[18331]: (mail) CMD (/usr/bin/python -S /var/lib/mailman/cron/qrunner) Oct 8 08:44:00 CROND[18333]: (mail) CMD (/usr/bin/python -S /var/lib/mailman/cron/qrunner) Oct 8 08:44:47 snort: [1:483:2] ICMP PING CyberKit 2.2 Windows [Classification: Misc activity] [Priority: 3]: {ICMP} 68.2.120.176 -> X.X.X.X Oct 8 08:45:00 CROND[18339]: (mail) CMD (/usr/bin/python -S /var/lib/mailman/cron/qrunner) Oct 8 08:45:00 CROND[18340]: (mail) CMD (/usr/bin/python -S /var/lib/mailman/cron/gate_news) Oct 8 08:46:00 CROND[18342]: (mail) CMD (/usr/bin/python -S /var/lib/mailman/cron/qrunner) Oct 8 08:47:00 CROND[18344]: (mail) CMD (/usr/bin/python -S /var/lib/mailman/cron/qrunner) Oct 8 08:48:00 CROND[18346]: (mail) CMD (/usr/bin/python -S /var/lib/mailman/cron/qrunner) Oct 8 08:48:19 snort: [1:483:2] ICMP PING CyberKit 2.2 Windows [Classification: Misc activity] [Priority: 3]: {ICMP} 68.3.73.120 -> X.X.X.X Oct 8 08:50:42 syslogd 1.4.1: restart. -- Interesting run in the fact that I got about 5 minutes into the record before it froze. Also interesting in that system processes were running after the freeze but prior to the reset. No apparent indications to me of what's causing the freeze. > To be sure it's the video driver causing the crash, could you try > without audio (lavrec -a 0 ...; with xawtv) and see if that crashes too? As referenced above...system crashes without audio and with xawtv. > Also, could you try without xawtv (but with audio) and see if that > causes crashes too? When run with audio & without xawtv the results are the same as with audio and xawtv. Freezes after slightly less than 2 minutes of runtime. > When it doesn't (and assuming you're using the nvidia.com binary driver), > could you try the XFree86 'nv' opensource driver and re-try that too > (now with audio+xawtv)? This is all just to pin down the exact problem. I'll run the "nv" drivers this afternoon and let you know the results.
