/var/log/messages probably contains the 'dmesg' output of just beore the
crash (there's timestamps in front of each messages), look at the
messages just before the crash and see if there's anything interesting
in there.

To be sure it's the video driver causing the crash, could you try
without audio (lavrec -a 0 ...; with xawtv) and see if that crashes too?
Also, could you try without xawtv (but with audio) and see if that
causes crashes too? When it doesn't (and assuming you're using the
nvidia.com binary driver), could you try the XFree86 'nv' opensource
driver and re-try that too (now with audio+xawtv)? This is all just to
pin down the exact problem.
