what already exists and try to do things right by learning from the
strength and weaknesses of other projects.

Dude you just rocked my world, I'd never have thought of this myself.

Also, I'd love for you to elaborate on the design of qmail (and why not
postfix as well), I'm sure you know them deeply, as your ninitial post
suggests.
