Per your suggestion I tried typing blindly. "startx" no reaction. "shutdown -r now" no reaction. "cat" process not viseable with ps -ax from ssh. "Ctrl-D" a number of times but "w" stills says root is logged in on console. However I did notice that the keyboard leds do react to presses of Capslock and Numlock.
