Did you try:

start X from the C0

Then it'll change to vt5. When the console remains black, try to alt+ctrl+F1 and then startx or cat or whatever.

Sometimes it really freezes but no all time. I have a Clevo notebook with ATI 9600 and it happens 1-2 weeks but I can solve it by restarting X.

And what's more: When I use Dual monitor, and it happens, on the second monitor I can see wanly the console. And I can operate with it. I just type startx and the X comes back.
