My family was complaining about the internet access being sporadic at times with long pauses ( Netflix etc ) So today I was able to trace it down to the fact that Optimum has fully rolled out DOCSIS 3.0 where as my cable modem was only a DOCSIS 2.0 ( Please see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOCSIS for more info ) Turns out when a 2.0 modem gets or sees a command it does not like it "resets" What you observe is a "pause" as not all TCP connections are dropped ( only time sensitive ones ) so this leads to a hard to locate internet issue. Simple resolution was to swap out the modem for a new ARRIS TM822 which is a DOCSIS 3.0 Cool side note, if you get this modem you can go to https://192.168.100.1 to access it's status pages which gives some modem info. When I set it up I was able to get a solid 28.71 / 5.41 Mbps ( my plan call for 25 / 5 Mbps ) so since I have the new modem I decided to upgrade to Ultra50. Which is listed as 50 / 25 Mbps but I now get 59.62 / 29.16 Mbps ( the extra $5 a month should be worth it for the upload speed increase for work at home ) The Ultra50 also has some interesting features like DDNS and unblocked port 25 and 80. Just sharing information that keeping up with your cable modem's DOCSIS version is VERY important.
