The period of so-called “free competition” was replaced by inter-imperialist rivalry leading to world war but that era has itself been replaced since 1945 by a post-colonial one in which the European and Japanese empires of Lenin's time were stripped of the colonial possessions which defined them as imperialist. That’s what led me to suggest that the present era more resembles the one when Britain was the sole hegemon and dominated by virtue of its economic supremacy moreso than its corresponding miltary power. Yet there are those on the left like Charlie who believe the period since Lenin hasn't changed, that it is still “divided among great powers” of roughly equal weight, that today it is China and Russia who are challenging the US hegemon and its allies in order to steal their overseas markets and resources, and that a third world war will be the "inevitable" outcome.
